Frequently Asked Questions

How did the Raptors win the NBA title in 2019?

DeMar DeRozan was traded to Toronto Raptors by Jakob Poltl (protected 2019 first-round draft pick) and a Toronto Raptors player in return for Kawhi Leonard.

On February 7, 2019, the Raptors traded Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright C. J. Miles, as well as a 2024 2nd-round draft pick to Memphis Grizzlies, were traded by the Raptors for Marc Gasol--another All-Star and former Defender Player of Year--and signed Jeremy Lin shortly following.

The Toronto Raptors had an extremely exciting offseason. Two major trades sent shockwaves through NBA. The Raptors first traded DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poltl, and a 2019 first-round draft pick (that was protected) to the San Antonio Spurs. In exchange, they got Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green (Spurs). Then, they traded Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright C. J. Miles, along with a 2024 second-round selection to the Memphis Grizzlies, were traded to Marc Gasol--another All-Star and former Defender of the Year. These moves placed the Raptors into a formidable position to compete in the NBA title race this season. Let's examine each trade.

Kawhi Leonard's trade was a risk-reward deal for the Raptors. On the one hand, Leonard is a top-5 player in the league when healthy and is coming off of an MVP-caliber season. On the other hand, he only played 9 games last season due to injury, and there are questions about his long-term health. However, the Raptors decided the reward was well worth the risk and settled for the deal. So far, Leonard has been healthy and has been playing at an All-Star level. He averages 26 points, 8 rebound, 3 assists, and 49% field goal shooting. His three-point percentage is 38%. If he keeps his health good, he could be a key to the Raptors winning the NBA title.

Marc Gasol's trade for Gasol was more of an immediate move than anything else. Gasol is in his thirties and is clearly out of his prime. But, he's still a good player that brings valuable experience and talent to the young Raptors. He is averaging fifteen points, eight rebounds, and four assists per game. He shoots 45% from three-point range, while also shooting 45% from behind the arc. The Raptors gave up some young assets in Delon Wright and C.J. They acquired Gasol from Miles, but believe that his experience will prove invaluable in the playoffs.

The Raptors started the season with a 6-0 record. They won their 16th game against Cleveland Cavaliers on November 23rd. This broke their franchise record of 20 consecutive wins. On December 1, they reached 20 wins faster than ever before. Also, after defeating Washington Wizards 140-138 in double overtime on January 13, the Raptors set a franchise record for scoring the most points in franchise history. To avoid further injury, Leonard was rested by the Raptors for more than 20 games. They managed to win the 2nd East seed. This was only two points behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Raptors had a great run in the playoffs. They defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and Milwaukee Bucks to reach their first NBA Finals. Leonard was named Finals MVP and the Raptors won their first title against the Golden State Warriors in game 6.

The Toronto Raptors enjoyed a successful offseason. This has been a huge success. Two All-Stars are on the roster and the Raptors look poised to be contenders in the years ahead. They have shown that they are capable of taking risks and making bold moves, even if it means building a championship-level team. It will be exciting to see if this team can continue their success.

What is the name of the Toronto Raptors' mascot?

The Toronto Raptors, a NBA franchise, was established in 1995. They play their games in Scotiabank Arena.

Raptor is the Raptors' mascot. He is a giant, red dinosaur. Raptor first appeared in 1995. He also makes appearances throughout Toronto, participating in charity events and community initiatives. For his many years of support to the Raptors, he was named NBA Mascot of the Years in 2019. Raptor is a well-known figure in Toronto, as well as around the NBA. This makes him one of professional sports' most popular mascots. He is also an internationally recognized symbol of Canada’s basketball fandom.

Many across the country and in cities all over the country agree with Raptor's enthusiasm about his team and its supporters. Raptor's leadership has made the Raptors one of the most popular teams in the NBA, winning the 2019 NBA championship. This was a major milestone for basketball lovers in Canada and Toronto. Raptor remains a major source for pride for those who are Raptors fans. Raptors pride will never end. Long live the Raptor. Go, Toronto Raptors!

Who owns Toronto Raptors

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment owns the team. MLSE also has the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs as well as the MLS's Toronto FC and CFL's Toronto Argonauts. They also own the AHL's Toronto Marlies and Toronto Rock lacrosse team.

Why did NBA leave Vancouver?

NBA left Vancouver because of a dispute with the City Council regarding arena financing. The City planned to provide $40 million for the construction of a new arena that would feature 12 luxury suites and two restaurants. However, the City Council wanted to give the team owners $60 million in taxpayer money to pay off their existing debt. This meant that the city had to borrow $200m to construct the arena. But the team owners would only have to pay back $20m. The city would have to pay the remainder of the loan back.

The City Council indicated that they would approve the plan if Rogers Arena was allowed to remain until the new facility is opened. The league refused to sign on, claiming that the arena was no longer large enough. They couldn't play there any more because the arena was too small. They felt it was unfair to ask them to keep playing in a smaller venue when they were not getting more revenue.

The City Council requested financial assistance from the province in return. While the province provided $150 million for the project, the City Council required another $100 million. The City decided to focus its efforts on building a new downtown arena and dropped its plans.

Vancouver ever had a team in the NBA?

Vancouver doesn't have a NBA franchise. The Vancouver Grizzlies were the city's basketball team from 1995 to 2001. In 2001, they moved to Memphis Tennessee. Vancouver is home to the Toronto Raptors, the local NBA team. Additionally, there are other professional basketball clubs that play in the Greater Vancouver Area. These include the BC Tigers from the Canadian Elite Basketball League as well as the Vancouver Volcanoes from the International Basketball League. A number of amateur and semiprofessional teams participate in various local leagues.

Vancouver offers many recreational options for fans to enjoy their favorite sport, aside from basketball. Vancouver Grizzlies Alumni Association aims for former players to get together and promote basketball in British Columbia. They host clinics for young players and offer viewing parties for Raptors games.

The city's love of basketball has not decreased since the departures of the Grizzlies. And it continues to be a supportive community in numerous ways. Vancouverites continue to share their passion for basketball through attending games, watching Raptors games, and supporting the many initiatives taken by former players as well as other organizations working to increase awareness about basketball in the area.
